Extract Student Userid
The grade export file includes a student’s e-mail address in parentheses (e.g. “(firstname.lastname@example.org)”) after the name. The instructions below will show how to split the name and e-mail address columns.
Note: Because this is the only way a student’s ID is recorded in Turnitin, students should be advised to only use their official Penn State e-mail.
- Insert a blank column after the Student column (usually column A).
- Highlight the Student column.
- Go to the Data tab (Windows) or Data menu (Mac) and select the option for Text to Columns.
- In the Text to Columns window, select the Delimited option. Click Next.
- Check the option for Other. Enter the left parenthesis character (i.e. “(“) into the field, the click Next.
- Click Finish. The e-mail address will be split into column B.
- Format the data following instructions in the links above. Use the Find and Replace function to eliminate information from the e-mail field as needed.
