In May 2014 after the spring 2014 semester ends, the Penn State Turnitin service will migrate to an updated interface which will streamline access to accounts via single sign-on with your Penn State Access Account user ID and password.

As part of the migration process, we are requiring that all Penn State instructors ensure that their Turnitin account email address be set to their official Penn State address (e.g., xyz123@psu.edu) by May 10, 2014. After May 10, 2014, Penn State will implement an account migration process for non-valid addresses which could impact access to previous Turnitin course materials from previous semesters. To learn more about which email address to use in the Penn State Turnitin service, see http://turnitin.psu.edu/help/setemail/.

Users with non-valid email addresses will have their current Turnitin instructor account locked and be provided with new accounts under their official Penn State email address. The Penn State Turntin service will work with Turnitin.com to migrate previous course content to the new accounts, but the process will not be instantaneous nor will it be fully guaranteed.

Changing or verifying your email before May 10, 2014 will ensure that your access to Turnitin materials continues. To change or verify your Turnitin email settings, follow the instructions at http://turnitin.psu.edu/help/setemail/.

If you have any questions about this change, please contact turnitin@psu.edu.

Turnitin now includes an option to upload image files for grading (such as photography assignments, scanned images of math or science assignments or original artwork). To take advantage of this option:

  1. Follow instructions to create a class in Turnitin.
  2. Click the Add Assignment button.
  3. In the next screen select Paper Assignment.
  4. In the options window, check the option for Allow any file type.
  5. Instructors can view and grade images with the GradeMark tool (the Originality Report option will be disabled).

Checkbox for Allow any File Type

Originality Report: Text vs. Image

Please note that Turnitin cannot assess the originality of image files. Originality Files can only be generated for selected text-based files (Word, RTF, text, PDF with text, HTML). If you need an Originality Report, then you need to ensure that Allow only file types that Turnitin can check for originality is checked.

Other File Types

When the Allow any file type option is checked, students can upload almost any file type up to 20 MB in size. In the GradeMark tool, instructors will be given the option to download the file, but can provide feedback and grades within Turnitin.

Turnitin has released two new Grademark features as of January 24, 2014.

  1. The first is a simplified Grading Form which lets instructors write comments and a score on different criteria, but does not require the creation of a full-blown rubric. See more at the link below.

  2. The comment/Quickmark tools have been modified so that you can point students to a particular link in a rubric/grading form for each comment.

The Turnitin service will remain active during the Penn State Holiday break for those with existing accounts, but please note the following.

  1. While the IT Service Desk remains closed, new instructor accounts will not be available. The ITS Help Desk will close on Sunday Dec 22 at 9:30 PM and reopen on January 2, 2014 by 8:00 AM.
  2. Turnitin has scheduled a maintenance outage for Saturday, Jan 4 from 11AM – 2PM Eastern time.

As of November 19, 2013 students can upload PowerPoint documents into Turnitin course assignments. The files will be converted to PDF but can submitted to the Originality Report and marked up with the GradeMark and PeerMark tools.

Students can upload either .ppt or .pptx files and the upload procedure is the same as for other file types. This option now allow instructors top evaluate presentations within the Turnitin environment. PowerPoint presentations can also be the basis of student peer review assignments.

The Turnitin service now includes the ability for students and instructors to upload documents from either their Google Drive or Dropbox accounts.

Which Documents?

Google Drive

Any Google Drive document that a person wishes to upload into Turnitin should be open to all users. Turnitin cannot access documents which are restricted to a group of users.
Note: If a document is restricted, a user can change its access, upload it to Turnitin, then change the access back as needed. Alternatively, a user can download the paper from these services and upload from their local computer.

Dropbox

Any Dropbox file of the permitted types can be uploaded, but performance may vary from browser to browser.
Note: If a user is experiencing a problem with a Dropbox upload, a different browser/device may be needed. Alternatively the file can be downloaded to a computer and then uploaded into Turnitin.

Document Types

Turnitin upload supports the following document types:

  • Microsoft Word (.doc /.docx only and macros are stripped)
  • PDF (except image scans)
  • HTML (properly formatted)
  • Rich text format (.rtf)
  • Plain text (.txt)
