This week, Teaching and Learning with Technology group published an interview with Nicole Chong and Michelle Vollmer of the Dickinson Law School about their use of Turnitin Grademark, particularly the QuickMarks and rubric tool, to add detailed comments to students assignments for the legal writing courses.

Both instructors praised the tool for both being a time saver and flexible enough to allow them to deliver individual feedback. Chong comments

“We were able to tailor both the QuickMarks and rubrics for our writing assignments. So, that helped us to be more efficient and organized and to give the students a consistent set of comments, both in the individualized comments and in the rubrics.”

We want to remind students and instructors to always use their official Penn State e-mail for their Turnitin account. Penn State e-mails include your Access Account user id plus “psu.edu (e.g. xyz123@psu.edu). Switching to another e-mail account, either a Penn State alias (e.g. xperson99999@psu.edu) or a non-Penn State account, could affect how Turnitin grades and classes are processed.

Please note that information about how to extract a student’s Penn State’s e-mail address from the Turnitin Grade export has been included on that page.

Note We strongly recommend that instructors advise students to ONLY use their Penn State e-mail address in Turnitin; otherwise processing of their grades may be delayed. Students using a non-Penn State e-mail can forward their Penn State e-mail.

Yes, but instructors should ensure that initial drafts are not submitted to the Originality Report database, or else false positives will be found for the later drafts.

Instructors should create an assignment for each draft. In the Optional Settings, instructors should set the "Submit papers to:" field to no repository. For the final paper, instructors should create a new assignment and let the check run as the instructor normally would. See detailed instructions at Turnitin.com.

A Turnitin training session will be offered on Thursday, September 12 in 23 Willard and over Adobe Connect. See registration links below for details.

Recently, Turnitin announced an iPad app called Grade Anywhere which would allow instructors to use the GradeMark tools on the iPad. Unfortunately, the new app is not integrated with Penn State single sign on, so Penn State instructors are not able to use the application at this time.

As an alternative, instructors can log in via http://turnitin.psu.edu/ and use some Turnitin services on the Safari or other mobile browser. Supported services there include class and assignment set up, basic review of originality reports and basic review of past graded assignments.

The sign in issue has been reported to the Turnitin help desk. Additional questions can be sent to turnitin@psu.edu.

Turnitin service may be intermittently unavailable during a scheduled maintenance period on Saturday, August 10th, from 10 AM to 2 PM Eastern Time. An announcement will appear for users within Turnitin in advance of when the system will be unavailable for this scheduled maintenance.

Instructors are encouraged to modify assignment due dates either before or at least several hours after the scheduled maintenance window.

Turntin users can find system status updates at http://turnitin.com/en_us/support/system-status or https://twitter.com/TurnitinStatus.

Due to security concerns, the activation procedure for the Penn State Turnitin service will be adjusted on Friday, August 9, 8:00 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time.

This change will ONLY impact faculty who applied for the Penn State Turnitin service before 8:00 A.M. on August 9, but did NOT log in to http://turnitin.psu.edu before 8:00 A.M. on Aug. 9 These instructors will need to request the updated activation information following the procedure outlined at http://turnitin.psu.edu/getstarted/.

Note that this change will not affect:

  • Faculty who apply for the service after 8:00 A.M. on Aug. 9, as they will receive the updated activation information.
  • Any instructor who activated their account before Aug. 9, 2013. They will continue be able to log in to http://turnitin.psu.edu as before.

Faculty with questions or concerns about Turnitin can contact turnitin@psu.edu.

Two Adobe Connect webinars on the expanded Turnitin service will be offered through ITS Training at the times below (click date link to view registration page). We hope to record at least one session.

In addition to these Penn State webinars, Turntin.com hosts video a video tutorial series and runs a weekly webinar series to introduce instructors to the Turntin service. Learn more and register at Turntin Instructor Training.
